The Dharmarajika is a Buddhist's stupa heritage site in Pakistan

Being socio-political activist and blogger, I have been writing the blogs on social and political matters for many years. Besides, I am working on promotion of peace through making photo and video blogs on pluralism and ancient culture of south Asia.

Therefore, I was decided to start my journey from Islamabad to Taxila to explore Buddhist heritage place. Firstly, I have visited the Taxila museum, later on, went to the stupa of Dharmarajika. It is about 3 kilometers from the Taxila museum.

However, The Dharmarajika is a significant archaeological site in Rawalpindi District of Punjab, Pakistan, located about 32-kilo meters northwest of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, and Dharmarajika is a large Buddhist stupa in the area of Taxila, Pakistan.

In Pakistan, the great numbers of ancient Buddhist sites exist in several areas of Pothohar region in Punjab province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan.

However, the Dharmarajika was under the two great empires one Maurya Empire and another one Kushan Empire. The historian believes that Dharmarajika was established by the Maurya emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE around the monument of the Buddha.

In additionally, the names Dharmarajika comes from Dharmaraja, a name given to Buddha who was the true Dharma Raja Lord of Law. It is also believed that ‘Dharmarajika’ is deprived of the word ‘Dharmaraja’, a name used by Maurya emperor Ashoka.

But, the Dharmarajika rediscovered by renowned archaeologist Sir Alexander Cunningham in the mid-19th century. Later on, in 1980, Taxila has declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
