Takht-e-Bahai Ancient Buddhist Monastery
The remains of #Buddhist Monastic Complex Takht-e-Bahi are scattered over an area of 98 acres on a hill top, having an altitude of 500 meters.
The ruins are located about 15 kilometers from city Mardan and about 156 Kilometers from Islamabad the capital city of #Pakistan
Today the word Takht means a throne or above or high and Bahi means water this name may have been given to the site as there are 2 water spring on the top of the site
.
The monastery was under the Kushan rulers and Hun rulers from 1st century CE to 7th century AD.
The remains of Takht-e-Bahi complex comprises a main stupa court votive stupa’s court, chapels, Meditation cells, Covered passageways, and many other buildings.
During the Kushan era, the construction phases may have been divided into three distict periods starting
from the 1st century BCE to 5th Century AD
The final construction period took place in the 6th and 7th centuries CE and was overseen by invading Hun rulers.
In modern history, General Court a French Officer in the service of the Sikh King Ranjeet Singh was the first to mention the existence of this complex in 1836.
Later on, the site was declared protected in 1916 and placed on the world heritage list by UNESCO in 1980
